WSSL League Information

The Western Slope State League (WSSL) was originally organized in 1994 by Montrose and reorganized by Cindy Eskwith of Vail and Nick McGrath of Basalt in 1996. At that time, the purpose was to create a league for advanced youth players in the central and western counties of Colorado. For advanced teams, the only alternative was to travel to the Front Range which, for many of the towns, required as much as six to eight hours of travel for one game. In addition, the Fall season for CSYSA traditionally begins the second weekend in March, a time when the mountain towns are precluded from playing out of doors due to the snowpack on the fields. Furthermore, many of the athletes are still in the middle of the season for ski racing or hockey. Therefore, the League adopted a season which begins in mid-April instead of March. The initial member clubs were Aspen, Basalt, Glenwood Falls, Montrose, Rifle, Steamboat Falls, and Vail. Since then, soccer clubs or independent teams from Carbondale, New Castle, Silt, Grand Junction and Palisade have joined. The original number of teams participating in WSSL was 25 in 1994; there are over 60 advanced teams participating in the Fall of 1999. In 1998, the Tri-Valley League merged with WSSL following a vote taken to do so by both Boards of Directors. Beginning in the Fall of 1999, WSSL will operate two leagues; Advanced and Developmental. Approximately 30 developmental teams registered for Fall play. WSSL Teams will have day trips to different cities in Western and Southern Colorado so the travel is not as extensive as a CYS team traveling to the front range. WSSL does not have age specific age brackets. WSSL age brackets are U12, U14 and U18. This is due to not having enough kids in one braket to form age specific teams.
